Ethiopia eyes more success in 2012 London Olympic

The Ethiopian Olympic Committee (EOC) said it is working hard to achieve good results in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday regarding Ethiopia’s preparations for the London Olympic, President of EOC, Berhane Kidanemariam, said the Committee is carrying out extensive preparations to attain more success in the 2012 London Olympic.

He said the activities launched a year ago by taking into account the current situation and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games as a benchmark have been progressing well.

Berhane indicated that the structure that EOC set to allow stakeholders to participate in the preparations has born encouraging results.

Some 8 athletes have so far received a scholarship to train abroad, which according to Berhane all expenses were covered by the Ethiopian Olympic Committee.

Moreover, 60 coaches and medical teams as well as 120 athletics, swimming, world taekwondo and box professionals have received training, he said.

Ethiopia earned 7 medals in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, he recalled, adding efforts would be made to raise this number by 40 percent in 2012 London Olympic, he said.

In addition to achieving good results, Ethiopia will use the 2012 London Olympic Games as a good opportunity to promote nation’s positive image to the rest of the world, he said.

EOC envisages collecting 30 million birr to provide sufficient funds to Ethiopian team, he said, further urging governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as stakeholders to contribute their share for the success of the plan.

As part of the efforts to expand sport facilities, EOC is making preparations to build an all–round Olympic academy on 120,000 square meters of land worth 43 million birr it secured from Addis Ababa City Administration for free, he said.

Abdisa Yadeta, Commissioner of Sports Commission, on his part said all pertinent bodies and the public need to work jointly to attain good results in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Ethiopia will take part in athletics, box, swimming and world taekwondo in the 2012 London Olympic Games scheduled to take place after 8 months.
