The 18th Ordinary Session of the Heads of States and Governments of the African Union (AU) opened on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Leaders and delegates from 50 members of the union will focus on boosting African trade, amid growing global economic uncertainty.
Representatives from top United Nations agencies and other international organizations are also attending the summit.
The summit is being held at a Chinese-built AU headquarters inaugurated on Saturday.
The two day summit, under the theme "boosting intra-African trade", is expected to outline plans for a Free Trade Zone across the African continent, which will be established by 2017.
The summit is expected to elect new members of the AU Commissions (AUC) on Monday including the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and the eight Commissioners.
