Haile Gebreselassie finishes fourth in Tokyo Marathon

(Sporting Alert) — Former world record holder Haile Gebrselassie could only finished in fourth place on Sunday in the Tokyo Marathon.
The Ethiopian, who was hoping to land a good performance as he seeks to win a place on the London Olympic team later this summer, finished in a time of two hours, eight minutes and 17 seconds.
Kenya’s Michael Kipyego, who trailed Gebrselassie for a while, went on to take the win in a time of two hours, seven minutes and 37 seconds in chilly conditions.

The result leaves Gebrselassie’s Olympic hopes in serious doubt as a host of Ethiopians, including Ayele Abshero (2:04:23), Dino Sefir (2:04:50) and Markos Geneti (2:04:54), who all ran below 2:05 in the Dubai Marathon last month are ahead of him.
