Ethiopia held on to a 1-1 draw against Benin to go through
to the next round of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, and knock out their
hosts.
Benin, who forced a goalless first leg draw in Addis Ababa, went
ahead on 19 minutes through Mickael Pote only for Adnane Girma to level just
before halftime. Adnane Girma made light of the wet conditions to turn and slam the ball beyond goalkeeper Fabien Farnolle for an equaliser that put the visitors ahead on the away-goal rule.
Ethiopia held South Africa away and defeated Central African Republic at home this month to lead a 2014 World Cup qualifying group despite being the bottom seeds.
Algeria, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Liberia, Malawi,
Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Uganda also secure second round places at the weekend
with the final place going to the Central African Republic or Egypt.
The draw for the next round of qualifying will be made in
July and will feature the teams who have been successful this weekend, plus the
winners of the tie between Egypt and Central African Republic, and those sides
who competed at the 2012 Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
