Sudan 5 - 3 Ethiopia, 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Sudan lifted by dubious penalties

Sudan has completed a fortunate 5-3 victory over Ethiopia in their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Omdurman on Saturday.

The first leg tie was locked at 3-3 into the closing stages, but the referee awarded two soft penalties to the home side and they were able to get some breathing space ahead of the return leg next month.

It was harsh on Ethiopia, who had fought from 3-1 down to level at 3-3, but they can take plenty of positives from the performance and some confidence into the return game.

Mudather El Tayeb gave the home side an early lead, before Getaneh Kebede equalized for the Ethiopians.
Muhammad Bashir put Sudan back ahead and they then made it 3-1 as Mosaab Omar scored.

It looked as though they would push on from there, but the Ethiopians struck back with two goals to make it 3-3.
Muhanned al-Tahir then struck twice late on for Sudan with two penalties, one of which did not even look as though it crossed the goalline.

  1. The Ethiopia National Team has always use an excuse and complain about the opposite team, the referee, the air condition, the reservation, the field, the ball, the fans, the finance, the federation, the over all situation, and others. This team has a spirit of loser and always be defeated by others. The players are not sensational and inspirational they always blaming and presenting causes all the time. We all are bored by this team, they can't face challenges. I think looking and supporting this team makes all people sick. They are an headache to all of us. It is better to stop this team here because we save our resources, money and time.
