Ethiopia preparing to host African Union Summit, golden jubilee

Ethiopia is making the necessary preparations to host the upcoming 20th African Union Summit and the celebration of the 50th golden jubilee of African Union (AU), Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

The Spokesperson of the Ministry Ambassador Dina Mufti briefed journalists on Wednesday on preparations undertaken to colorfully mark the golden jubilee of the former Organization for African Unity (OAU) and the current AU.

He said the necessary preparations are being undertaken by the National Committee comprising different stakeholders in Ethiopia. "Film festivals, musical extravaganza, sports, symposiums, seminars and exhibitions are among the programs designed to celebrate the golden jubilee colorfully," he said:

Dina said the decision to establish the AU/OAU's headquarters in Addis Ababa and to celebrate its 50th golden jubilee at its birthplace was the reflection of the understanding about Ethiopia's constructive role, together with its African brothers, in supporting African cause both during the colonialism and post-independence era, and its significant contribution in all the main pillars of the AU.
The 20th AU Summit will take place from 21- 28 January 2013 while the celebration starts on January 27 and will continue until May 25.
